I have experienced identity theft several times, fortunately not this seriously, but I did get charged $600 for a phone bill I never used, when I went out of town two weeks, and somebody 'slammed' me, changing my long distance provider and getting a calling card she racked up with $600 in two weeks!
Later on, I got charges against my account, of $1 by companies I didnt' know, this is a way to see if it's a legitimate account, and again another 'slamming' incident where I was charged $52. I NEVER charge gas at the pump, ONLY with the cashier. They can put a device on pumps and ATMS that will gather your info.
